The Schöck Combar® glass-fibre composite is being used in the construction of the Wiental Canal – a non-conductive, non-magnetisable reinforcement solution, ideal for sensitive measurement technology in tunnel construction. Innovation and quality for sustainable infrastructure.
For one of Vienna’s most significant infrastructure projects – the construction of the new Wiental Canal – MABA Fertigteilindustrie GmbH is relying on innovative solutions from Schöck: in selected sections of the tunnel segments, glass-fibre-reinforced reinforcement elements made from Schöck Combar® are being used.
Combar® offers key advantages for tunnel construction involving sensitive measurement technology: the material is electrically non-conductive and non-magnetisable, thereby preventing interference with highly sensitive electrical measurement and control equipment. These properties make Combar® the ideal solution for use in those tunnel sections where measurements are carried out.
The full range of Schöck Combar® products was utilised for the project – including specially prefabricated shaping stirrups with an external length of up to 1.5 metres, as well as straight bars with and without end bolts in various diameters.
Top quality for sustainable infrastructure
The €270 million project involves the manufacture of around 43,000 reinforced concrete tubbings for an 8.6-kilometre-long sewer that will run beneath the Wienfluss in future. The aim is to improve water quality and relieve pressure on the existing sewer network during heavy rainfall events. The construction work is being carried out by the ARGE Wiental Kanal WSKE West consortium, with the participation of Östu Stettin and BeMo Tunneling, and MABA FTI – a subsidiary of the Kirchdorfer Group – acting as a subcontractor for the tubbing production.
