Modern infrastructure requires advanced construction methods that are also environmentally friendly. An outstanding example of this is the renovation of the footbridge over the A831 motorway. To ensure that the bridge remains functional in the long term, a pilot project was carried out: the use of Schöck Combar®, a non-metallic glass fibre composite material that is corrosion-resistant.
The A831 section begins at the Stuttgart motorway junction, extends to the Stuttgart-Vaihingen junction and then merges into the B14 federal road. To the south, the A81 connects to the Stuttgart motorway junction. A footbridge was constructed in this area to enable pedestrians to cross the A831.
Usually, during repair work, the concrete in the bridge superstructure is protected against external influences – such as de-icing salt – by applying a surface coating. With bridge caps reinforced with Combar®, this costly coating is no longer necessary, as the rust-free glass fibre composite does not require protection against corrosion.
