Sustainability Report - Schöck AG 2022

15 kWh/m² per year. Other special features include the installation of a photovoltaic system and the use of electrical and software monitoring with the help of sensors in the building services system. This continuously reduces the building's operating costs. The building has been LEED Platinum certified since 28 July 2020. Since May 2021, three bee colonies with around 45,000 bees have been located on the roof of the building and are looked after by a beekeeper and appropriately trained Schöck employees. In addition, a wood chips plant has been in operation at the Baden-Baden plant since 1990, which reduces the need for fossil fuels. The production site in Baden-Baden is operated with a combined heat and power plant (CHP), which already uses a proportion of biomass as an energy source. Growth without increasing energy consumption One goal in the climate protection field of activity is to reduce the relative energy consumption in order to reduce GHG emissions. This means increasing production and sales quantities without increasing the energy required to do so by the same extent. At the Baden-Baden plant, we were able to increase production by 27% in the period from 2016 to 2020, while at the same time reducing energy consumption by 37% (source: IREES). We are already working on comparable measures at the Halle and Essen plants. Measure 5: Shorter transport routes In addition, Schöck has been able to reduce transport distances by switching to local suppliers. Wood and pallets are now delivered directly to the plant in Poland, hot-melt adhesives to the plant in Essen. Measure 6: Optimisation of fleet management Schöck is looking for ways to continuously reduce the CO2 emissions of its own vehicle fleet and of the leased vehicles. To this end, the latest fuel-saving technologies have been increasingly used in recent years. At the same time, fuel consumption has been recorded by working together with the leasing company in order to make the progress achieved measurable. A continuous reduction of CO2 emissions in g/km has been achieved here. The switch to hybrid technology and e-mobility are further measures currently being implemented. Measure 7: Climate-friendly business travel Schöck's business activities necessitate occasional air travel. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, these decreased dramatically in 2020. This development is to be continued. For this reason, investments have been made in modern equipment for video conferences, which can replace face-to-face meetings in many cases. This can greatly reduce the number of business trips. For shorter and medium distances - to production sites, for example - Schöck has long relied on Deutsche Bahn as the first choice of transport. Here, Schöck uses the "bahn.business" programme, under which all emissions generated by travel have been directly offset since 2020. As a result, an equivalent of 47,692 kg CO2 could be saved in the 2022 reporting year compared with journeys by car. (Source: Deutsche Bahn). Measure 8: Raising awareness among employees The project goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2025 can only succeed if employees from all areas make their daily contribution. Schöck motivates its employees in many ways to set a good example and contribute their own ideas. Measures include: “Cycle-to-work” initiative for employees Schöck provides employees with a high-quality bicycle, e-bike, pedelec or S-pedelec on request as part of a deferred compensation scheme. The bike can be used privately and for official ridesto work. This measure also promotes employee health and is a climate-friendly alternative to the company car or private car. Series of lectures for employees Schöck prepares employees for the common goal of climate neutrality in an internal series of lectures on environmental management and energy efficiency at the headquarter in Baden-Baden. Milestones already achieved are documented and upcoming initiatives are presented. The attendance rate shows that environmental protection and energy-efficient action are perceived as a common concern in everyday (working) life. The Schöck way: Think with us. Work with us. As long ago as 2018, Schöck organised an action week at Baden-Baden under the motto "Climate protection wins". Here, employees were invited to contribute their own ideas to promote greater awareness in relation to the use of resources. Among the suggestions implemented was the changeover from disposable paper coffee cups to ceramic coffee cups. This enabled a considerable volume of waste to be saved. Further resources were conserved by switching from glass bottles with deposit for mineral water to refillable, employee-owned bottles with refilling stations. The use of organic products from regional suppliers in the company restaurant "Atrium" also makes a positive contribution to climate protection. Measure 9: Returnable instead of disposable Schöck has started to use environmentally friendly reusable packaging for the transport of foam parts for Isokorb®. 50 tonnes of CO2 and approx. 2.5 tonnes of plastic film can now be saved per year. In addition, employees in the Purchasing and Materials Management division regularly develop and evaluate further possible environmental protection measures. This also includes optimising the packaging of Schöck Tronsole® and expanding direct deliveries to the plants. 57 Schöck Sustainability Report 2022
